First Key Lime Pie builds begin popping up?

A Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 are reportedly found to be running a new KRS36B build of the Android platform.

The first signs of a new Key Lime Pie build of Android have surfaced, albeit in a somewhat unconventional manner.

A user in the Chromium bug tracker (Chromium is Chrome's open source backbone) recently reported running tests on a variety of mobile devices. Among them, a Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 were listed as having the KRS36B build of Android.

The finding is interesting since both devices recently saw official updates that brought them current with builds JSS15J and JWR66V, respectively. The first letter in the build almost always matches up to the Android version. For instance, "J" stands for Jelly Bean. In this case, the 'K' signals Key Lime Pie.

To be clear, Google has yet to formally introduce Key Lime Pie or indicate its arrival on a device. It's also too early to say that Key Lime Pie will tie in to Android 5.0 or, say, Android 4.5.

Unfortunately, there's nothing in the Chromium bug post that sheds any additional light on Key Lime Pie. It is noteworthy, however, in that there are versions of Android out there that are more current than 4.3 Jelly Bean.

Perhaps the next Nexus smartphone will be announced later this fall with an Android Key Lime Pie build that comes with the cool, new features Android fans eat up like candy.
